Biodiversity loss is one of the most important environmental issues of our time with far-reaching consequences. Species extinction can disrupt existing ecological linkages and degrade natural communities, potentially leading to their collapse. Declining biodiversity can also destabilise biotic communities, leading to a loss of ecosystem integrity and impairing the ability of the ecosystem to support critical ecological functions.
